History

French toast has been known since the 4th-5th century — a Roman recipe is described in the book of Apicius. In France the dish is called pain perdu (lost bread), as it was made from stale bread that would otherwise be thrown away.

Ingredients

Батон или бриошь4 slices
Eggs2 pc
Milk100ml
Sugar1 tbsp
Ванильный экстракт1 tsp
Cinnamon0.5 tsp
Сливочное масло30g
Berries и кленовый сиропfor serving

Preparation

1Whisk eggs with milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon.
2Dip each slice of bread in the mixture for 15-20 seconds on each side.
3Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
4Fry the bread for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden.
5Serve with berries, maple syrup, or powdered sugar.

⏱ Cook time: 15 min

Tips

Use slightly stale bread — it absorbs the mixture better and holds together. Brioche gives the richest flavor thanks to its buttery dough.
